Max Light is a 22 year-old jazz guitarist from the Washington, D.C. area, now living in Boston where he is a senior at New England Conservatory studying jazz performance.  At NEC, Max has been fortunate to study under Jerry Bergonzi, John Mcneil, Anthony Coleman, Joe Morris, Brad Shepik, and Donny McCaslin among others.  They have encouraged him to take risks and develop a sound that is uniquely his own.  He has played solo and in small and large ensembles at NEC, including the NEC Jazz Orchestra and the NEC Jazz Honors Ensemble.

Max got his start in jazz in Bethesda, MD, first as the bassist for the Pyle Middle School jazz band under the direction of the late Frankie Ball and then as the guitarist for the award-winning Walt Whitman High School Jazz Band as well as for the all-county and all-state jazz bands.  Throughout high school, Max studied privately with Chuck Underwood and also played with the Jazz Academy of Washington under the direction of Paul Carr.  Max continues to work with Paul at the Jazz Academy of Music (JAM) Camp each summer.

Max has led and been a sideman in combos in clubs in the Boston New York, and D.C. regions, including Bohemian Caverns, Bethesda Jazz & Blues Supper Club, Twins Jazz, Wally’s Jazz Café, Somethin’ Jazz Club, and the Lily Pad.  He has performed at the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall and at the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival and the Next Generation Jazz Festival in Monterey, California.
