ALEX HAMBURGER – 8PM & 10PM

Alex Hamburger is a young vocalist and flute player from the DC area, studying at SUNY Purchase in New York. There, she studies privately under the instruction of Gary Smulyan and Alexis Cole. She has also had the opportunity to study with other renowned musicians such as Pete Malinverni, Ralph Lalama, Jon Faddis and Tim Albright. Alex is also a part of the Purchase Latin Orchestra playing bari under the direction of Dave DeJesus; and the Soul Voices Choir under the direction of Pete Malinverni.

Alex attended Montgomery Blair High School where she was involved in many award winning ensembles both playing and singing. As well as these ensembles, Alex was also a part of the prestigious MCPS All County and Maryland All State Bands as well as being on full scholarship at the Levine school of music and as a part of the Levine Honors program. An essential part of Alex’s early training was studying with one of her mentors Paul Carr and being a part of the Jazz Academy of Washington under his direction. Under the Jazz Academy and the Jazz Academy summer camp (JAM) Alex had many playing and learning opportunities with many incredible musicians. This past summer, Alex returned to JAM camp as a counselor.

Alex has had the honor of sharing the stage with incredible musicians such as Paul Carr, Randy Brecker, Javon Jackson, Warren Wolf, Carmen Bradford and Dick Smith. She has played in many renowned performance venues in both DC and New York including  Bethesda Blues and Jazz, Westminster Prespeterian Church, Round House Theater, Twins Jazz, Roscoe’s Pizzeria, The Flatiron Room and SUNY Purchase’s Performing Arts Center. As well as playing in many venues in these two cities, Alex has also had the honor of playing in many prestigious jazz festivals around the country including Jazz Educators Network Festival in Atlanta, The Cleveland Jazz Festival, The Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival, The Telluride Jazz Festival and The Washington Women in Jazz Festival Award, where she received second place in their young artist competition.
