JULY 2009

1 THE CHRIS GRASSO AND PAUL PIEPER WORKSHOP

Chris Grasso is a Washington, DC-based jazz pianist who specializes in working with vocalists. He has performed at all the major venues in the DC area. Chris has performed with vocalist Sharon Clark at the Cape May Jazz Festival and appears annually at the East Coast Jazz Festival. He also has appeared with jazz greats including Keter Betts and one of New Orleans' historic jazz families, the Jordans (Marlon, Stephanie and Rachel). Prior to pursuing a career in jazz, Chris studied classical piano at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore and the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where he earned a Bachelor of Musical Arts degree and won the university’s concerto competition. He also placed third in the National Chopin Competition and has appeared as a concerto soloist with the University of Michigan Philharmonic and the Syracuse Symphony. After college, he took an eight-year break from music, working as a journalist and earning a law degree from the University of California-Berkeley.

Whether he's pushing the envelope of modern music with his trio Signals, performing lead vocals and guitar with the rock group Glass and Apples, or sharing jazz standards with audiences across the world, versatile guitarist Paul Pieper brings technical and improvisational prowess to every song he plays. Paul's debut solo record, Stories of Before , beautifully showcases Paul's ability with a unique blend of jazz and pop compositions all filtered through the rich timbre of steel and nylon string guitars.

A DC Native, Paul first caught the attention of the music community in 1995 when he captured second place from over 200 competitors at the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Guitar Competition, a global event whose judges included Jim Hall, Pat Metheny, John Scofield, and Pat Martino. A sought after musician in the Washington D.C. area, he has numerous appearances at D.C.'s famed venues and a 2000 stint with the Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra to his name. As a jazzman he's traveled to a dozen countries, ranging from Chile to Iceland, from Kyrgyzstan to Japan. In 2005 alone he accompanied vocalist Ericka Ovette on trips to Ecuador and Bangladesh, and he joined bass player Victor Dvoskin on a three-week tour of Russia. A respected composer, arranger, and session player, his compositions Something Blue, Spider Monkey, Pensees, Kineticism and The Red and the Black have been performed and recorded locally, and Paul has appeared on upwards of twenty CDs.

In addition to promoting Stories of Before, Paul's current projects include the group Signals--a trio with Emre Kartari on drums and Gavin Fallow on electric bass. "We're trying to play music with a strong groove, that incorporates our various influences, from pop and dance music to electronic music to some of the improvisational elements you might find in a jazz group. We've worked to make the music sound as 'right now' as possible." Paul also has a modern jazz record in the works that will feature original compositions with guitar, bass, drums, and tenor saxophone.

The quartet is performing in anticipation of their upcoming CD release, which also features the acclaimed guitarist John Moulder. The album will feature Lebrun's tune "Jambo," which was awarded Best Small Group Composition at the 2008 International Jazz Composers Symposium in Tampa, FL.

Josh Moshier has performed in Chicago with Scott Anderson’s Nia Quintet, James Davis, Doug Stone, Erin McDougald, and Jeff Campbell & Clay Jenkins. 7 FIRECRACKER JAZZ BAND

“History, music, passion and dance combine to drive the show. No smoke or mirrors, just some of Asheville’s finest musicians recreating the sound of the early 20th Century.” - Blue Mountain Living

With their supercharged new release appropriately titled, EXPLODES, the FIRECRACKER JAZZ BAND revives the energy and excitement of the vintage 1920’s & ‘30’s Jazz. Featuring the music of such greats as Jelly Roll Morton, and Sydney Bechet, as well as Firecracker originals, EXPLODES possesses that vaudeville audacity that once kept speakeasies roaring through the night. While gaining acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic, this album offers a rejuvenated and excited take on a vintage genre. Scotland’s Kings Jazz Review infers that with this album, FIRECRACKER JAZZ BAND “becomes an inevitable contestant towards classic jazz at its very best.” Back stateside, it was voted as one of the Top CDs released in 2007 by WNCW.

EXPLODES features Je Widenhouse (Squirrel Nut Zippers, Sex Police, Hobex) on trumpet, Reese Gray (Squirrel Nut Zippers, Asylum Street Spankers) on piano, Mike Gray on drums, Henry Westmoreland on Tuba, Earl Sachais (Tommy Dorsesy Band, Sammy Davis Jr, and many others) on Trombone, and Jason Krekel (Mad Tea Party) on banjo and tenor guitar.

JE WIDENHOUSE (trumpet and cornet) has been traveling the world and playing professionally for 15 years. Previous projects include Squirrel Nut Zippers, Sex Police, and Hobex. This ensemble is especially rewarding and challenging, and Je has endeavored to accept Jazz as his personal savior.

EARL SACHAIS (trombone) is a former music instructor and New York City hired gun for the performing ensembles such as Warren Covington and the

Tommy Dorsey Band. He has backed Barbara Streisand, Sammy Davis Jr, and many others. Earl has a Bachelor’s and Master’s of Music Degree from the Manhattan School of Music.

REESE GRAY (piano, banjo, ukulele and saw) is an amazing stride pianist in the style of Fats Waller. He embodies the early American jazz scene, dressing the part and with raw enthusiasm for the music that keeps it fresh. Former projects include Squirrel Nut Zippers and Asylum Street Spankers.

JON CORBIN (guitar) adds a steady swing to the rhythm section on guitar and tenor banjo. He patterns his playing style with the Firecrackers after Eddie Lang and Django Rienhardt, the pre-eminent guitarists of the early jazz era. Former projects include The Rib Tips and the Eliza Lynn Band.

MICHAEL GRAY (drums) drives the rhythm with an energy and expressiveness rarely demonstrated in traditional jazz. A native of Baltimore, and the younger brother of pianist Reese Gray, Mike’s musical influences include Baby Dodds, Papa Joe Jones, and Buddy Rich.

HENRY WESTMORELAND (tuba) incorporates a funk, zydeco, and boogiewoogie rock & roll influence to the heavy hitting rhythm section. Henry is a graduate from Brevard College with a degree in Music Theory/ Composition and a degree in Music Performance. He also plays baritone saxophone with the popular band The Squirrel Nut Zippers.

17, 18 MICHAEL THOMAS (TRUMPET) CD RELEASE PARTY

BUY TICKETS ONLINE

For DC-based trumpeter Michael Thomas this initial release, The Messenger, is the result of a true labor of love. Not one to wait for a record label to come knocking at his door, Thomas seized the initiative himself, not only starting his own label and releasing his own debut disc, but also developing his own home studio to lay down these 10 persuasive tracks. Thomas has a brass proud trumpeter's arrogance in sound but not demeanor. The title is an apt one as the feeling harkens back to Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers without in any way being imitative. And Mr. Do Everything Michael Thomas also wrote all but three of these tunes, mining the books of Sahib Shihab, Tina Brooks, and Mal Waldron for the other three. From Waldron's book he beautifully essays the ever-lovely “Soul Eyes” as a quartet feature for his flugelhorn.

Elsewhere the chores are shared roundly by Thomas' mates the edgy tenor saxman Zack Graddy, bassist Kent Miller, drummer Frank Williams lV, pianist Darius Scott, and he broadens the band on two tracks with the energetic altoist Antonio Parker. -Willard Jenkins , AllAboutJazz.com

AUGUST 2009

2 DENNIS J.

In the world of jazz we get a music more melodically improvised than any other American music form. Jazz singers or the vocal interpreters of this art form have to sound like that third or fourth or fifth instrument in that trio, quartet or quintet to become that “one”, unique wall of sound that particular group tries to convey to their listening audience. In the Washington D.C. area there are very few artists who seem capable of performing such a feat. Dennis J. appears to be one of the selected vocalists able to pull this off. Rarely has there come along a more pure adherent to the traditional, straight a head, no frills interpretations of the Great American Songbook Composers. From Ellington to Porter; from Gershwin, Anthony Newley and the wonderful composers in between, upon hearing Dennis Js’ renderings of their classic tunes, you are almost literally transformed back to what is called the “Golden Age of Jazz. There is a trueness to his voice that few artists in this area (and for that matter any other) can dare be compared to. It’s very clear that this “artist” has listened to the master vocalists and has learned his lessons very, well. A few years ago Dennis J. released a CD of standards called “The Best of Me”. Upon listening to the recording you get an idea of his strict adherence to the master vocalists of yesterday. But to be quite honest and although the CD has been well received, it does not do this artist justice. You have to hear this performer in a live setting. Here, you get the unvarnished, no hold back vocal stylings that is breathtaking to say the least. The emotion he conveys, the control and beauty of the voice, the phrasing and being able to relate personally to every song he sings(in particular the slower pieces) is turning out to be not just a performance but verging on being an “experience”. He sings “My Foolish Heart” with so much skill and confidence, you find yourself wondering if the writer of the tune didn’t have him in mind to sing it once it was written. “Who Can I Turn Too”, “All My Tomorrows”, “My Romance”, and “I‘ve Grown Accustomed To Her Face” and others will be worth the price of admission alone just to hear his vocal interpretation. For those folks who long for the masters of yesterday (male or female), for the novice jazz listener who is looking for a starting point, particularly jazz vocal listeners, and for those who needed to be reminded that jazz is as beautiful, provocative, relaxing, and as relevant today as it was decades ago, make it a point to frequent the many jazz venues in the Washington metro area. Above all, however seek out Mr. Dennis J’s performances. Repeating what one listener recently said of his shows, “as long as this brother continues to sing, the masters will never die”.

Bass clarinetist and composer Todd Marcus is one of the few jazz artists worldwide to focus exclusively on use of the bass clarinet as a primary soloing instrument.

Jazz Times contributing journalist David Adler writes, “Marcus…brings a saxophonic rigor to the bass clarinet while also generating enough sonic power to front a nine-piece ensemble…With his melodic imagination and technical aptitude on an unorthodox horn, Marcus has something truly new and personal to offer.”

Self taught in jazz theory and composition, Marcus’ compositions draw largely on straight-ahead jazz and classical influences but over recent years have also increasingly explored the Middle-Eastern sounds from his Egyptian-American heritage. His work has been performed by jazz musicians such as Greg Osby, Gary Thomas, Orrin Evans, Ingred Jensen, Joel Frahm, and Michael Formanek. His work also includes international performances, clinics, and radio play. Marcus was also a featured guest at the 1st World Bass Clarinet Convention in Rotterdam, Holland where his work was recognized for both his compositions and unique solo voice.

BUY TICKETS ONLINE

Israeli Jazz guitarist Assaf Kehati’s trio features the legendary drummer Billy Hart. The trio plays both Kehati’s original compositions as well as jazz standards by composers such as Arthur Altman, Irving Berlin and Ray Noble.

Kehati’s recent compositions are inspired by the daily and trivial, yet wonderful and significant experiences of life: from a winter, snow-laden view of Fenway Park from his apartment porch (A View From My Window), to the mundane but satisfying life of a snail (Sunshine Berale), to a story of exodus with mixed feelings of freedom, pride, fear, and hope (Passover). His imagination has been fed over the years by a wide range of influences such as Berlioz, Kenny Rogers, Pat Metheny, Sting, and Gershwin.

In Boston, Kehati has preformed at Jordan Hall, The Beehive, Slades, Savant Project, Boston University, and Brandeis University. In his native Israel he has appeared at the Shablul Jazz Club, the Yellow Submarine, the Tel Aviv Jazz Festival, and the Machtesh Ramon Jazz Festival. As a sideman, Kehati has played with the Rimon Honors Ensemble at the Jazz and Blues Festival and the Holon Big Band at the Israel National Festival in Jerusalem. In addition to Hart and Garzone, Kehati has performed alongside such noted musicians as Don Byron and Frank Gambale and studied with artists such as Jerry Bergonzi, Dave Holland, Danilo Perez, Bob Moses and Robin Eubanks.

About Billy Hart:
Hart was born in Washington D.C. on November 29, 1940.

His first steady gigs of note were with Shirley Horn and Buck Hill. In the 1960’s he toured with Jimmy Smith, Wes Montgomery, Eddie Harris, and Pharoah Sanders. In 1970 he joined Herbie Hancock’s Sextet, and after that band broke up in 1973 he joined first McCoy Tyner (two years) and then Stan Getz (four). In the 1980’s Hart was a regular with many bands and leaders: Gerry Mulligan, Billy Harper, Clark Terry, The New York Jazz Quartet, the Jazztet, Mingus Dynasty and most extensively with Quest (with David Liebman, Ritchie Beirach, and Ron McClure). In the 1990’s Hart was a member of the Charles Lloyd, Joe Lovano, and Tom Harrell groups, and in 1999 he began performing with the Three Tenors (Liebman, Lovano, and Michael Brecker). He is on about 500 hundred records as a sideman.
